Rolling East

Day 10, Today we continued east through Germany, my one complaint about Germany is they are quite fond of cobbles. I am not, they shake the bike, they shake me, the are generally unpleasant but they were frequent and at times lengthy. Now I know in times passed the cobbled street was necessary, in a pre-tarmac era. We have though moved on and many road options are now available, Germany though in many places has stuck with cobbles, I can only assume this is an attempt to support the automotive industry as it fucks up everyone’s suspension. Anyway today, aside from the cobbles the going was smooth, at points we even had that impossible and rarely known (or perhaps noticed) thing a tailwind! Before lunch we cycled to Bremen, spotting a working waterwheel and fruit vending machine (not together). At the vending machine which also contained jams and honey we bought apples primarily to weigh Hannah down as her bike is far lighter than mine (she lacks winter kit). We also added many bits of paper to her load by picking up her train tickets for tomorrow.

For lunch I had vegetarian Schnitzel because its cultural! It was excellent and enjoyed with chips! The waitress also deserves a mention for tolerating Hannah’s reasonable and my terrible German, letting us practice before revealing excellent English. After lunch we joined the EuroVelo route from Bremen - Hamburg and suddenly were spotting touring cyclists all over the place We had wondered why we'd seen so few maybe only a couple each day, turns out they are all just doing more normal routes and not random bits of German countryside. Was nice to see but did mean when we tried to stop for cake there were no tables available. Bravely we continued on and despite some more sketchy road surfaces and a little bit more of ‘on the fly’ re-routing, made excellent time for my first 100km + day of the trip, previous days had been in the 90s but today we tipped over giving us an excellent head start on reaching Hamburg tomorrow. Just before the campsite we stopped for ice cream, this time I ditched the coffee and went for something epic and chocolate based. Hannah went with ice cream spaghetti, which is just ice cream in strings but again it had fruit with it, she is so healthy!

At the campsite there may have been swimming, we didn't go.
